FIRE Calculator

Calculate your Financial Independence number, how many years until you reach FIRE, and exactly what savings rate gets you there fastest.

Estimated annual spending in retirement
Use real (inflation-adjusted) returns. Global equities: ~5-7% real historically.
4% is the classic Trinity Study rate. Use 3-3.5% for very early retirement (50+ years).

How the Calculation Works

Your FIRE number is derived from the safe withdrawal rate (SWR). The years-to-FIRE is calculated by simulating annual portfolio growth, adding your annual savings, until the portfolio reaches your FIRE number.

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ (SWR ÷ 100)
Each year: Portfolio = Portfolio × (1 + return) + Annual Savings

Example: Annual expenses $36,000, SWR 4% → FIRE Number = $36,000 ÷ 0.04 = $900,000. Starting from $25,000 with $24,000/year savings at 6% real return, this takes approximately 22 years. All figures are in today's dollars (real terms) using real return rates.
